Defective Drug Side Effects Topics

Remicade (infliximab)—a drug approved by the FDA in 1998 to relieve the often-debilitating symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis—has been linked to serious skin problems. Evidence of Remicade and skin problems first surfaced in April 2005, when Dutch researchers reported their clinical findings in the medical journal Arthritis Research and Therapy.

All evidence to date indicates that Remicade use can significantly increase the risk of skin infections, diseases, reactions, and skin cancer. If you or a loved one has suffered from Remicade and skin problems, please contact us to learn more about your rights and options.

Remicade and Skin Problems: The Dutch Study

Researchers report that TNF-blocking drugs—Remicade, Humira, and Enbrel—pose significant and clinically important dermatological problems for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Of the nearly 300 patients involved in this study, 25 percent sought medical help from a dermatologist regarding Remicade and skin problems during the first two years of treatment. By comparison, only 13 percent of those taking a placebo pill sought attention for skin problems during that time. This shows that Remicade and related drugs can double the risk of skin problems .

The most common Remicade skin problems

* SKIN INFECTIONS were the most common dermatological complaint experienced by patients taking Remicade and related drugs during the Dutch study.
* ECZEMA was the second most common skin condition caused by Remicade in the study.
* DRUG-INDUCED SKIN ERUPTIONS were also common among those taking these rheumatoid arthritis drugs.

Patients who experience any of these Remicade skin problems should seek medical attention.

Cancer: Remicade and Skin Problems

New evidence, published in May 2006 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests that Remicade can triple the risk of skin cancer . While previous studies indicated the increased risk of infection and lymphoma, a blood cancer, this is the first study to show that Remicade can cause skin cancer.

According to experts, certain patients may be at a greater risk of Remicade skin cancer and other serious side effects . Patients with a history of cancer, those who are sick or older, those who take higher doses of Remicade, and those who have used Remicade for long periods may be at the greatest risk for Remicade side effects.

If you are concerned about Remicade skin problems, you may wish to speak with your doctor to discuss your current treatment and weigh the risks and benefits of continuing Remicade use.
