A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has found that patients taking Humira and Remicade face a threefold risk of developing several types of cancer and double the risk of developing serious infection.

Humira and Remicade were approved for use in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in 2002 and 1998 respectively. Since that time, Humira and Remicade have received approval to treat various other conditions including psoriatic arthritis and Crohn's disease. Because of these broader uses, the number of patients taking Humira and Remicade has soared in recent years. More than 500,000 patients have undergone treatment with the two injectable drugs.

Humira and Remicade Treatment

Humira and Remicade are classified as TNF (tumor necrosis factor) blocking drugs, which block production of a protein linked with inflammation. Because of this property, doctors have found Humira and Remicade useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. However, this recent study has revealed serious side effects and risks associated with the drugs that call into question the risk-benefit ratio.

Humira and Remicade: The Risks

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic conducted a study comparing the effects of Humira and Remicade with placebos. They found 29 cancers in 3,493 patients receiving either Humira or Remicade. Of the 1,512 patients taking placebos, only 3 cancers were found.

Humira and Remicade show an increased risk for the following cancers :

* Skin
* Gastrointestinal
* Breast
* Lung tumors

Previous reports on the drugs have also shown an increased risk for lymphoma .

In addition to heightened cancer risks, the Mayo Clinic study linked Humira and Remicade to serious infections such as pneumonia and cellulitis . According to the data, serious infections occurred in 126 of the patients taking Humira and Remicade compared with 26 who were on placebos.

Prior research has shown a connection between these drugs and tuberculosis infection, which primarily afflicts the lungs but can also affect the spine and the brain in those with compromised immune systems. Remicade has also been implicated in the development of rare but serious liver conditions including acute liver failure and other liver problems that could potentially lead to death.
