Defective Drug Side Effects Topics

Geodon is an antipsychotic drug used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar mania. Geodon works by balancing the chemicals seratonin and dopamine in the brain to help control symptoms of these disorders and help sufferers live more balanced lives.

Symptoms of schizophrenia that may be controlled by Geodon include: hearing voices, seeing or sensing things that are not there; mistaken beliefs; unusual suspiciousness or paranoia; withdrawal from family and friends.

Manufactured by Pfizer Inc., Geodon was approved by the FDA in February 2001 for the treatment of schizophrenia. In August 2004, the FDA also approved Geodon for the treatment of mania associated with bipolar disorder. The drug has also been found to ease symptoms of mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is characterized by profound mood swings ranging from severe depression to unnatural highs. Symptoms of bipolar mania that may be decreased by Geodon include an overly energetic feeling, irritability, extreme talkativeness and excessive happiness.

Geodon has proven successful at treating bipolar disorder without causing the significant weight gain that often occurs with other bipolar medications. Most other prescriptions for bipolar disorder have resulted in an average weight gain of 50 pounds. This side effect has led many people to discontinue usage of their medication and search for another with less of a weight gain effect. Now, with the approval of Geodon to treat bipolar disorder, patients must search no more, as the drug has shown no significant adverse effects on weight gain or lipids.

Prescribed in capsule form, Geodon usually takes just one week after initial treatment to begin to work. Geodon can also be administered in injection form in patients who require immediate relief from manic or psychotic states.

Licensed in 67 countries, more than three million prescriptions for the drug have been written worldwide.
